About the Global Day of Prayer
A Global Day of Prayer
All together in many places
“When the day of Pentecost had come,
they were all together in one place.” — Acts 2:1
All together in many places. As dawn broke on the first Pentecost, Christians were gathered “all together in one place” (Acts 2:1). On Pentecost in 2006, many millions of Christians will again be all together—but in many places. We'll join together in prayers of blessing for the nations, praying in one accord for the biblical hope of Christ's greater glory and the transformation of all nations.
Arising from Africa. In 2001, one stadium in Cape Town, South Africa was filled with 45,000 people to pray. In 2002, it expanded to eight stadiums and 350,000. A year later 2.5 million gathered in 130 stadiums. On May 2, 2004, the movement exploded to nearly ten times the size. More than 22 million rallied in prayer at more than 2,000 sites throughout every single country on the continent of Africa (56 nations). Leaders from most major traditions of Christian faith called their people to join in this historic act of united prayer.
Multiplying Across the Face of the Earth. African Christians issued the same call for repentance and prayer to believers around the world. The result was the first Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday in 2005, drawing an estimated 200 million people. In 2006, 2007, 2008 and again in 2009, on Pentecost Sunday, even greater numbers of Christians gathered in almost every country on earth.
Joining together in three ways:
Part 1: May 13 - May 22, 2010. Ten days of constant prayer. On the evening
of Ascension Day,
May 13, millions the world over will begin by joining their prayers night and day for ten days.
Part 2: May 23, 2010. The Global Day of Prayer. On Pentecost Sunday, Christians in many lands are planning to assemble in massive gatherings in stadiums and open squares. In other places, believers will gather in homes and other public venues. To help connect and align prayers even more, there will be three hours of live prayer broadcast. The signal will be relayed by satellite, radio and Internet so that many millions will be linked simultaneously all over the world. The same broadcast will be repeated so that people in any time zone can take part on Pentecost afternoon or evening.
Part 3: May 24 - August 21, 2010. Ninety Days of Blessing. As in the
first Pentecost, transformed Christians transform their communities, becoming
the answer to their own prayers. The Global Day of Prayer anticipates the forming
or furthering of local alliances among pastors, congregations, mission agencies,
and business leaders to bring practical, transformational blessing to their
cities and communities.
